TEFF
PROJECT ETHIOPIA

Conscious Food
introduction

The ESFAI project, Ethiopian Sustainable Farming & Agriculture Initiative, stems from Andriani Spa‘s historical vocation for the production of innovative products. All this, combined with a constant practical commitment to Sustainable Development, has led to the development of virtuous projects aimed at creating supply chains for Teff crops in Ethiopia.

The Project

The agri-food sector offers indispensable solutions for sustainable development and the eradication of hunger and poverty.

At Andriani, we combine a constant search for new raw materials for our innovative products with a commitment to improving the nutrition of populations struggling with poverty by promoting sustainable agriculture.

With this in mind, we turned our gaze towards the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia, to discover Teff, an ancient cereal considered to be one of the superfoods.

We are convinced that if managed with sustainable practices, agriculture can provide nutritious food for all and generate adequate incomes, supporting people-centred rural development while protecting the environment.

The Goals

The objectives of the ESFAI project are multiple:

  • KNOW HOW, transfer of knowledge and tools for sustainable crop development;
  • GROW THE ETIOPE NATIONAL MARKET, through the sale of Teff products;
  • COLLABORATION, by establishing relations between Andriani’s scientific partners on sustainable supply chains and the Ethiopian Research Institute on varietal selection.

What is Teff?

Teff or Tef, is an ancient grain originating from Ethiopia and Eritrea, countries where it has been cultivated for over 3000 years and is the staple food of the Ethiopian people. The term Tef means ‘lost’, because its seed is so tiny that it is very easy to lose it. Teff paste is rich in fibre, iron, phosphorus, magnesium and manganese.
